MAIN THEME...
* * *
The third movement begins with a horn section playing the first eight bars of the main theme as a waltz. It is accompanied by pizzicato strings and an English horn and bassoon playing counterpoint in two-part harmony. At bar nine, the double reeds are replaced by a trumpet and trombone and a wooden flute begins playing a very active obligato similar to the one that appeared in the second movement of this symphony. This section gradually winds down and strings begin to accompany the various lines presented by several instruments. In the last section of this movement, there are three presentations of a variation of the first four bars of the main theme. The second presentation modulates down a step, the third modulates down another step. The symphony then comes to an end on a final sustained note.
